Amid rising fuel costs, you might be taking more interest in electric vehicles. And plenty of brands are now eager to serve you.

You could save cash and help cut carbon emissions from transport, which account for 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

But did you know that personal cars made up only 9% of electric vehicle sales in 2021? Electric buses accounted for 44%, followed by motorbikes and tricycles at 42%, while trucks contributed 1%.

More than 280 million electric tricycles, motorcycles, and scooters have already been sold. Personal electric vehicles on the roads top 20 million, followed by 1.3 million electric buses and trucks. These vehicles can save up to 1.5 million barrels of oil each day, or 3% of land transport demand.

Replacing fossil fuels with clean energy on our roads remains far off. But it's a step in the right direction, toward net zero by 2050 to stop the planet’s temperature from rising more than 1.5 degrees from pre-industrial times.
