Safe Flooring for Older Adults

As we grow older our bodies change. Getting up, sitting, or walking can all be accident risks, especially if we fall.
Every year, one in every three older adults will suffer a fall, and half of them fall more than once. Each fall could cause a fracture. A fifth of older adults who fall may rely on a wheelchair for the rest of their lives. They will face movement issues. They may struggle to care for themselves and need constant assistance.
Choosing the right design and materials therefore matters a lot. Flooring should be smooth and even to eliminate the risk of tripping, such as on thresholds. It must also be non-slip (with an anti-slip value of at least R10), especially in the bathroom. Dry and wet areas of the bathroom must be separated. The shower area, for example, can be slippery from soap and shampoo and needs an anti-slip value of at least R11. Material should also cushion impact to decrease dangers from accidents.
Flooring innovations now absorb and lessen shocks from falls, reducing the risk of fractures. Flooring composed of flexible EPDM rubber sheet withstands wheelchairs, moisture, and UV and it can also improve stability and reduce tiredness when standing for a long time. This material can be used for indoor and outdoor flooring, as well as for walkways and playgrounds, and is excellent for households with older adults.
Accidents happen, so safe design and materials are critical for preventing and reducing injuries.
