Weeds in cracks in fences, on decks, in vegetable patches, and on wasteland can be unwelcome. But they can have valuable qualities…

Plants on the green roof of the Forest Pavilion at The Forestias were surveyed by RISC with Dr. Saroj Ruchisansakun and his team from Science Mahidol University’s faculty of plant science. The green roof spans 1,268 square meters. The many weeds growing on it include Telosma cordata, Typha angustifolia, Gymnopetalum integrifolim, Chloris barbata, and Portulaca quadrifida. The study found, as expected, that these plants grow easily and are climate resistant.

Over 120 plant species were found in 4 survey areas in 2020-21. Researchers investigated every season and all 1,268 square meters. The best plants for urban rooftops can endure all 4 seasons, including Kyllinga brevifolia, Phyllanthus niruri, Mimosa pudica, Desmodium triflorum (L.) DC., Ruellia tuberosa, and Ocimum tenuiflorum. These plants not only look great and reduce heat but also encourage biodiversity. They’re clearly not just weeds.
