Strong or dazzling light, known as ‘glare’, is a key issue for designers as it directly affects well-being.

Glare can cause many health problems, such as irritated or tired eyes, headaches, and – in the worst case – migraines. Glare also contributes to incidents like workplace accidents.

Glare generally comes from either artificial or natural light. Glare from artificial light can be controlled by choosing appropriate light bulbs and putting lights in suitable locations. Natural light glare can be prevented with building components like curtains, blinds, and mirror film.

Simulation programs can help to decide lighting positions. Furniture location is a big factor for glare from natural light. A work desk near a window, for example, can cause glare such as reflections on our laptop screen that irritate and tire our eyes.

Indoor lighting design can help prevent glare, letting us work more effectively and enjoy better health.
