Sharks have kept the ecological balance of the oceans for over 400 million years, long before the dinosaurs of the Triassic period 250 million years. Today, though, they are at the mercy of a much later arrival, humankind.
Each year as many as 273 million sharks (estimate from WildAid) are killed for luxury dishes like shark-fin soup. This soup was once served only to emperors and aristocrats. But today it has become commonplace. It is actually lacking in taste, with the fin providing mainly texture.
Nutrients in a shark fin are equivalent to those in an egg, according to the National Food Institute of the Ministry of Industry. No evidence suggests fins can prevent cancer or give long life, the beliefs that make this soup popular. The time has come to save sharks and to stop eating this soup, so that ecological balance can return.
