A lot of studies show how much natural light impacts our feelings, circadian rhythm, and brain function. Insufficient light exposure, for example, can affect sleep quality. Patients suffering from depression or recovering from a heart attack can get better far faster if their room has 2 large windows. Getting 3 hours of natural light each day reduces stress for hospital nurses. These are just a few examples of the benefits of natural light.

Building design plays a huge role in indoor light. In a tropical country like Thailand, a designer must understand natural light exposure to prevent indoor heat from sunlight. A simulation program can help accurately calculate lighting design in each season. Techniques like building orientation, partitions to open and enclose areas, facade design, and heat-proof glass can help ensure appropriate indoor lighting.

Good natural lighting design can bring a host of benefits, both physical and mental. The circadian system also affects your feelings, how much you enjoy each activity and your experience of a building.

There is still much more to learn about healthy lighting. Stay tuned for the next post!
