Kitchens are where we prepare food. So how can we make them as safe as possible?
Natural stone countertops will often be the first choice, as they are strong, scratch-resistant, durable, long-lasting, and heat-resistant. But did you know that natural stone may release radioactive radon gas? Formed by the breakdown of uranium, it can cause lung cancer. Grooves or joints on the counter surface can also harbor dust or dirt containing microbes that threaten our health.
When choosing a countertop, pick a surface with Food Grade NSF/ANSI 51 certification. Popular options include synthetic stone that can be as strong and scratch-resistant as natural stone. It is also free from radon, safe for your health, and easy to maintain.
