Pet-Friendly Condominium Design

Pet-Friendly Condominium Design

The trend in urban development toward high-rise buildings can restrict some aspects of daily life such as gardening and pet keeping.

These activities boost quality of life and well-being so designers and develops must ensure residents can continue the lifestyle they love. Future projects should meet such needs especially for living with pets, which many see as members of the family.

Research into petkeeping can guide the design and development of pet-friendly condominiums that boost the well-being of both pets and owners. Design can also help create a responsible pet-keeping community.

Studying the behavior and daily routines of dogs and cats through participatory research found that the daily routines of pets and owners largely align.

Activities like running or exercising that need space can be done in common areas under the owner's supervision. When their owners aren’t around, pets usually engage in passive activities like sleeping, which they can comfortably do at home.

Homes should therefore have a designated pet living area of at least 80x120x90cm so even larger dogs can stand, sit, lie down, and turn comfortably.

This space is not to confine pets but to give them enough space for their basic needs. Systems for feeding and waste disposal further enhance convenience for both pets and owners.
