RISC Achieves WELL Building Standard Gold Certification – A Regional First in Southeast Asia

RISC by MQDC has become the first in Southeast Asia to earn the WELL Building Standard Gold Certification for New and Existing Interiors. Awarded by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), this milestone highlights RISC’s commitment to health and well-being under its “For All Well-Being” philosophy. MQDC will integrate these standards across projects like The Forestias, further solidifying its leadership in sustainable development.

Building and nature

“MQDC prioritizes living under the concept of ‘Well-Being.’ Every MQDC project is built upon research conducted by RISC, a leading innovation center for well-being and sustainability. Achieving Southeast Asia’s and Thailand’s first WELL Building Standard Gold Certification highlights the leadership of MQDC and RISC in advancing the real estate sector. MQDC is committed to applying these standards across all its projects to create truly sustainable well-being for all.”

The Research & Innovation for Sustainability Center (RISC)

RISC has been awarded “Gold” certification in the Interior Project category, becoming the first building in Southeast Asia and Thailand to achieve this recognition since October 1, 2020. The certification reflects RISC’s adherence to the seven core concepts essential for building performance, including:

Air

Water

Light

Nourishment

Fitness

Comfort

Mind

This aligns with the two primary research focuses of RISC by MQDC, which include:

Health & Wellness

Materials & Resources

Seven Years in the Making: The WELL Building Standard

The WELL Building Standard was developed over seven years through extensive research in collaboration with medical professionals, scientists, and industry experts. RISC by MQDC underwent a thorough evaluation process, culminating in a final assessment conducted by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), an independent organization responsible for certifying compliance with the WELL Building Standard.

Magnolias ratchadamri boulevard design standard

The RISC office building at Magnolias Ratchadamri Boulevard complies with the seven key aspects of the WELL Building Standard:

1

Air

The interior of RISC by MQDC is designed for optimal air circulation and protection against external pollutants with air filters. This ensures clean indoor air, free from dust, pathogens, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Additionally, air quality sensors and a real-time air quality display system are installed, and careful selection of non-toxic building materials is prioritized.

2

Water

RISC by MQDC promotes access to clean water for both consumption and usage by placing water dispensers at key, easily accessible locations. The water must be clear, free from chemical contaminants and bacteria. Additionally, water samples are sent for quality testing and contaminant detection every three months.

3

Light

The lighting system at RISC by MQDC is designed to maximize natural light intake without affecting the internal temperature. Additionally, the artificial lighting within the building is sufficiently bright for various activities and helps prevent glare. Proper lighting quality positively impacts the human circadian rhythm, such as the production of melatonin, which affects sleep.

4

Nourishment

RISC by MQDC encourages building users to consume healthy food and beverages, reducing the long-term risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) caused by unhealthy eating habits. Additionally, the design includes designated dining areas with seating capacity calculated based on the number of building users.

5

Fitness

The environment within RISC by MQDC is designed to encourage building users to exercise or change postures throughout the day, reducing sedentary lifestyles and office syndrome. The workstations are adjustable for both sitting and standing positions, while the office chairs are selected based on BIFMA standards to support ergonomics and various postures.

6

Comfort

The interior of RISC by MQDC is designed according to Universal Design principles and uses ergonomic furniture to accommodate people of all ages. The building also controls temperature, humidity, noise, and odors to maintain a comfortable environment. Additionally, a sound masking system is installed to reduce noise pollution.

7

Mind

RISC by MQDC enhances the environment to positively impact the mental health of building users by creating green spaces based on Biophilic Design principles, promoting relaxation during work. There are nap corners to boost work efficiency and sufficient storage cabinets, with a minimum storage volume of 0.1 cubic meters. Additionally, user satisfaction surveys are conducted annually to improve various systems within the building.

Well-being Material Library

RISC is the first research center in Asia focused on the development of sustainable well-being, aiming to be a hub for research data and a global network of sustainability researchers. The facility is equipped with energy management systems and indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring across all zones. Furthermore, RISC by MQDC is dedicated to researching resource efficiency in the real estate industry, establishing Thailand’s first Well-being Material Library. This library showcases over 500 environmentally friendly construction materials, complete with detailed information and samples.
