(Not) the secret story of "snails"

In this rainy season, snails might be eating your favorite plants. They love the damp and move by night so we might not find them during the daytime. But today let’s look at what makes them special (rather than just a pest).
- Snail fossils appear in the Cambrian Period 550 million years ago, in an era of invertebrates long before the Triassic period when dinosaurs walked the earth.
- Snails have no ears but only 2 pairs of tentacles. The longer pair have light-sensitive eyespots. The shorter pair are used for sensing and smelling.
- Snails each have two genders to boost their chance of reproducing.
- Snails hibernate in winter in a coat of mucus.
- Snails eat all kinds of plant and even plaster on walls, which contains calcium for their shells.
Snails might not seem our friends. But studies show their value for ecosystems. The heavy metal in their tissues reflects toxins in an environment. So they can also be beneficial for us.
