On rainy days we often look for shelter—and many animals also seek refuge under leaves or bushes. But for some creatures it’s the time to get active.
Rain doesn’t only help plants grow lush and green. Both small and large animals can also benefit. Moisture-loving creatures like frogs, toads, earthworms, snails, and some insects become more active. They move about and forage as the ground becomes damp. The moisture in the soil makes it easier for them to move and reduces the risk of losing water through their skin. Predators like small snakes also take advantage of this moment to hunt. The rainy season marks the beginning of the breeding season for many species, especially amphibians and insects. The humidity and temporary water sources provide ideal conditions for laying eggs and nurturing young.
If you who want to create a nature-friendly garden, a small water feature can attract a variety of animals. Plant a diverse mix of vegetation, including low shrubs, fruit trees, and flowering plants, to create habitats and shelters for wildlife. Using organic fertilizers also helps preserve soil-dwelling creatures and supports long-term biodiversity in your garden.
To keep unwanted animals away, regular garden maintenance is key. Trim overgrown bushes and grass. Routinely check and clear potential hiding spots like wood piles, stones, or old pots. This helps reduce the chance of dangerous animals taking up residence.
Rain not only changes the atmosphere around us—it also reveals the quiet rhythm of life in nature. So next time it rains, take a moment to look around. You might discover something you've never seen before, just waiting for you to notice.
